Rev. Dr. Katie Cannon, Colleague and Sister in Faith

FaithTrust Institute mourns the death of Rev. Dr. Katie Cannon. We have lost a colleague and sister in faith whose contributions are now foundational to theological inquiry. Cannon insisted that that academic pursuit of theological studies must always be grounded in the real lives of women and people of color. In doing so she taught us new ways to do theology. Her work and her leadership were great gifts to the church and the beloved community leading us to manifest liberation and justice. She will be greatly missed by many.

From The New York Times:

Katie Cannon, 68, Dies; Lifted Black Women’s Perspective in Theology

In her teaching and in books like “Black Womanist Ethics,” Dr. Cannon sought to escape the white- and male-centered views of religion.
