Book Club: The Round House by Louise Erdrich

Winner of the National Book Award, The Round House has been compared to To Kill a Mockingbird because of its young narrator and the powerful portrayals of individuals seeking justice.

The novel describes the problem that Native people on reservations have faced regarding legal jurisdiction over non-native perpetrators of violence. We will discuss the current status of efforts to address this problem and its historic impact on Native communities. We will also discuss the tension between Native spirituality and the Catholic Church which is an important issue throughout the novel, providing us with an opportunity to discuss the particular painful historical relationship between Native communities and the church and the ambivalence which remains for many people.
